Industrial computers must handle a high level of dust or dirt to function efficiently in an industrial setting. Many industrial computers are fanless that limit the airflow coming through the unit, but the heat is dissipated through conduction. For computers exposed to high levels of dust and water, IP (Ingress Protection) is a necessary requirement. IP67 prevents dust from entering into the system and is waterproof when immersed in 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. For abattoirs, food processing, mining, military and traffic control application, IP67-rated machines are a must.
Box PCs, the most common format of embedded PCs, are often used in cabinet enclosures, vehicles, and digital signage. They are ideal for any industrial application.
CAN (Controller Area Network), is ideal for automotive and robotics uses as it is a serial vehicle bus standard that creates a channel of communication between microcontrollers and devices. Types of CPU
ARM processors are a RISC based architecture which feature fewer transistors, which translates to lower costs, less power consumption, and better heat dissipation. They are perfect for smartphones, laptops, tablets, and other lightweight, battery-operated devices. These ARM-based modules and SBCs support Linux and Android OS.
For digital signage and gaming needs, AMD offers great GPU solutions for the most complex graphics applications. Nvidia GPUs are popular choices for robotics, advanced driver advisory systems (ADAS), license plate recognition (LPR), and intelligent machines. They offer the highest level of AI processing through MXM and PCIe card formats. The AI processing levels range from 1050, 1080, RTX2080, RTX3080, Tesla, and Quadro models.
Atom, a type of Intel processor, fits into the x86 and x86-64 families of processors. These processors are ideal for low power, wide temp and efficient internet devices.
Compared to Atom, Celeron and Pentium offer better performance in terms of graphics. Though they out-perform Atom, they still feature economical hardware and Windows IOT licensing. These processors are ideal for single-screen digital signage and other GUI-based applications.
With two cores, the Core i3 requires a Windows IOT Value license and is the lowest in clock speed and performance, but it is the perfect fit for targeted and economic applications.
As a mid-tier option, the i5 has four to six cores. Like the i3, it requires a Windows IOT Value license, but it does have higher clock speeds and performance. It can handle a higher level of processing, decoding, and graphics performance.
At the high end, the i7 has up to eight cores. It offers the best performance and clock speeds for the most demanding processing, decoding, and graphics. Unlike the i3 and i5, the i7 CPU requires a High End License.
